Seal of Biliteracy


The Board of Trustees of the District will recognize students who have developed linguistic proficiency and cultural literacy in one or more world languages offered within the District curriculum, in addition to English.  The District shall present a Seal of Biliteracy on the transcript and diploma of the graduating senior as an indicator of accomplishment for future employers and for college admissions offices based on a review of the student qualifications in accordance with District established criteria. 

To be eligible to receive the District’s Seal of Biliteracy Award upon graduation, a student shall meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Complete all requirements for a high school diploma, including completion of all English/Language Arts requirements with an overall grade point average of 2.0 or above in grades 9 through first semester grade 12.
  2. Pass the California Standards Test in English-Language Arts administered in grade ten at or above the “proficient” level.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in one or more languages, in addition to English, through one of the following criteria
    1. Pass a world language Advanced Placement examination with a score of 3 or higher or an International Baccalaureate examination with a score of 4 or higher.
    2. Successfully complete a four-year high school course of study in a specific world language and attain an overall grade point average of 3.0 or above in that world language course of study.
    3. Pass the world language SAT Test II examination with a score of 600 or higher.

If the primary language of a student is other than English, the student shall meet both of the following criteria:

  1. Attain the early advance proficiency level required California English Language Development Test (CELDT).
  2. Meet all the criteria listed above in 1, 2, and 3.
