We Need You! CUSD Continues to Increase Accountability and Oversight, Urges Public Participation

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – The Capistrano Unified School District is inviting community members to apply to serve on one of four committees and commissions recently established to support the education of young people and increase public participation, oversight and transparency on school facilities and District finances. The deadline to apply to all except the School Family Regional Committee is Wednesday, November 30, 2016.

“Supporting education for young people is the most important thing we can do,” stated CUSD President Amy Hanacek. “CUSD has made a very deliberate effort over the last several years to increase community outreach and participation because we know the extraordinary work we do in our schools each and every day cannot be done without the support of our communities. The investment of your time and expertise is critical to our work and we look forward to this continuing conversation.”

Applications are available for the following committees and commissions on our website at

School Facilities and Finance Advisory Committee will serve as an administrative advisory committee to provide input, advice and recommendations on topics pertaining to school facilities and finance, including the implementation of the general obligation bond program. The committee will include regional representation from school families throughout the District.

Community Facilities District Citizen's Oversight and Advisory Commission will be established with representation from each Community Facilities District (CFD) to provide oversight, input and recommendations to the Board of Trustees on topics pertaining to CFDs. Advisory topics may include CFD facilities, funding, and community information. Oversight topics may include reviewing facilities plans and fund expenditures, and reporting to the Board and the public.

Independent Citizens Oversight Committee will be established if voters approve Measure M on November 8, 2016. This committee will be established in accordance with Education Code sections 15278-15282 and applicable Board policy, to ensure bond proceeds are expended only for the school facilities projects listed in the Bond Project List located in the bond resolution.

CUSD will also be establishing the School Family Regional Committee by high school boundary, with representation from each school within the high school boundary, local stakeholder groups and organizations. The regional committees will collaborate with the School Facilities and Finance Advisory
Committee to provide input, advice and recommendations on school facilities and finance within their particular high school boundary. The application for the School Family Regional Committee will be available at a later date.
