ATMS Information

Founded in 1995, the Capistrano Valley High School Academy of Technology, Math, and Science is a challenging program intended to better serve and promote students who have demonstrated exceptional ability, interest, and/or aptitude in the areas of mathematics, science, or technology.

Students from the Academy have attended such institutions as MIT, Caltech, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Rice, Stanford, the Naval Academy, Columbia, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCI, UCSD, Boston University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Chicago, and the list goes on.   Because of the Academy’s outstanding success in preparing students for admission to the country’s best colleges and universities, Capistrano Valley High School is now sanctioned to offer an International Baccalaureate Diploma program.    All incoming Freshmen interested in pursuing an IB Diploma are urged to enroll in ATMS.  The Academy’s curriculum at the Freshman and Sophomore level provides the “pre-IB” support for this internationally recognized program of superior scholarship.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Admission to the Academy is at the freshman level for students who have completed Algebra I (with a grade of B (80%) or better prior to the beginning of school in September. (To complete the ATMS program, the student must take Geometry at some time prior to senior year either as an elective or through a District-approved independent study program.)

HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Students should complete the application (see other side) and return it to their middle school academic advisors. Students who are reasonably sure they will meet the requirement – completing Algebra I with a grade of B or better, should fill out their registration form with ATMS course numbers for:

ATMS Algebra II/ Trig, Accelerated
ATMS Biology
ATMS English I or English I, Accelerated
AP World History* See note below

AP World History is recommended. However, ATMS students may elect to defer this course and then take either AP World History or AP European History as sophomores.  All ATMS students must take at least one of these AP social science courses; both are recommended.
