Engineering Pathways

Engineering Pathways Overview

  • The first cohort of students (Class of 2018) entering the Engineering Pathways at CVHS were required to make a 4 year commitment in our high school engineering program. The program implementation is funded through our participation in a study on engineering preparation programs.  For our participation in the study CVHS receives the technology, equipment, and teacher training required to implement the engineering program.

  • The second cohort of students and beyond (Class of 2019) are not required to commit to 4 years although we believe that students who do so will meet personal goals for post-secondary education and career preparation.
    • As the program develops, CVHS will be building out three Career Pathways that can be generalized to serve in other Engineering fields.
      • Environmental Engineering
      • Product Design & Development
      • Arts, Media & Entertainment

  • Engineering Program Courses
    • Courses in the engineering program were developed by Project Lead The Way. Students in the engineering program will take a four-year sequence of courses.
    • The program courses are currently all elective and do not replace any science courses.

Introduction to Engineering Design (IED, 1 year)

Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work.

Principles of Engineering (POE, 1 year)

Through problems that engage and challenge, students explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials, and automation. Students develop skills in problem solving, research, and design while learning strategies for design process documentation, collaboration, and presentation.
