Winter 2005-2006
CAREER CENTER/ROP

The Armed Services Aptitude Battery will be given on December 6 at 8:10am in the library.  This battery of tests is designed for juniors and seniors and will give an indication of how student aptitudes match nine different career areas.  Students may sign up in the career center where they will pick up a class release slip.  This test is free of charge.
Students have already had advisement day and are locking in their spring schedules.  Students having questions or wishing to add an R.O.P. class should see Mrs. Deckert in the Career Center.  During the spring semester we will continue to expand our new Acme Animation program taught by Mr. Baker.  This class connects students with professionals at Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks and more!  We are also adding a Law Enforcement class that will be taught on campus first period.  The Law Enforcement Class is a prerequisite requirement for students wishing to take Crime Scene Investigation.  Mr. Foster will be adding an Advanced Sports Medicine class that will include an internship component.  Returning spring semester will be R.O.P. House Construction, Theatre Technology and an additional Cabinetmaking class.  We currently offer 28 different R.O.P. classes here on campus but students may take classes at any of the high schools in the district and at the main R.O.P. campus in San Juan Capistrano.  Did you know that the main R.O.P. center is a certified “Prometric Testing Center”?  Students may earn industry certification in areas such as Cisco and A+.    Many classes have been articulated with Saddleback College and students earn college as well as high school elective credit.  More specific information is available at www.capolagrop.12.ca.us.
As we approach the financial aid filing period, January 2-March 1, 2006, students may want to pick up a “guide to financial aid” in guidance or the career center.  Students may access scholarship information at www.fastweb.com.  The Career Center also has a separate web page with direct links to UC, Cal State, Saddleback, CollegeBoard, R.O.P. and much more.  The Career Center Web can be reached at www.cvhs.com, click on guidance and then look for Career Center under Linda Deckert.  Ms. Wendt is the scholarship advisor at C.V.H.S. and she posts most scholarship openings on the CVHS website.  See Ms. Wendt for applications to specific scholarships.
Students who are currently working may wish to receive credit for their work experience through R.O.P. CTE classes.  The classes are specific to the type of work the student does.  Students earn 10 credits a semester and may enroll twice.  The three classes currently offered are for students working in Business Technology, Retail Trades and Restaurant Trades.
We are now taking sign-ups for our spring “Job Shadow” in April.  Students are matched with a local employer for the day.  This is a great day for students to find mentors and explore career options in a real world setting.
